Composite vs. PVC vs. Wood: Choosing Your Decking
An honest comparison of the three main decking families — upfront cost, upkeep, feel underfoot and where each one shines.

There's no single best decking material — only the best fit for your budget, climate and how much maintenance you want.
Natural wood
Pressure-treated lumber and cedar cost the least upfront and feel authentic. The trade-off is regular cleaning and re-staining every few years.
Composite
Composite blends wood fibers and plastics with a protective shell. It costs more initially but skips the staining and resists splinters and fading.
PVC
Fully synthetic PVC boards don't absorb moisture, making them a strong choice near pools and in damp, shaded yards. They're usually the premium-priced option.
Think in decades
Compare lifetime cost, not just the initial price — include staining supplies, your time and expected lifespan when you weigh the options.
